"Joseph Cullen Root founded Woodmen of America June 6, 1890, in Omaha, Neb. One of the first fraternal benefit societies in this country, Woodmen provided life insurance protection to members. Root believed that members and their lodges should be active volunteers in their communities in projects that helped those in need.

"Today, the Woodmen work with the American Red Cross to provide disaster relief. More than 1,600 Woodmen belong to 160 disaster action teams across the nation." ~ The Daily Journal, By PAULA BARR, Sept. 30, 2007
