There is a U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey benchmark mounted on the base of a large lion sculpture in front of the Lions Club Adult & Senior Activity Center found at Lions Field. The street address is 2809 Broadway, San Antonio, TX USA 78234. When standing with your back toward Broadway and facing the side of the lion, the benchmark is near the bottom right corner of the vertical base that supports the lion sculpture. The benchmark is fastened in a hole cut into the dark sandstone making the horizontal stone base.
Lions Field is the name of the land used by the Lions Club of San Antonio, and this local Lions Club was one of the ten founding Texas Lions Club founders that sponsored a centennial commemorative plaque on the other side of this lions sculptures vertical base. The history of this parcel of land bounded by Broadway on the south edge, Avenue B on the west edge, Lions Field Trail on the north edge, and E. Mulberry Ave. on the east edge are the boundaries of this area known as Lion Field. There are trails to walk, an activity center for adults and seniors, and a famous children's playground that is the first supervised children's playground West of the Mississippi River. The most visible object seen from the passengers driving past on Broadway is this 14 foot long stark white marble lion sculpture on a multilayered sandstone base. It is on the lowest layer of the base that the AY0262 benchmark is found.
