NL Bij het ingang van het park staat het beeld van Sappho. Ze staat afgebeeld samen met een lier op een stenen sokkel. Het beeld is gemaakt van brons.

Dit jaartal is een beetje raadselachtig, want het beeld is gemaakt in 1929 naar een origineel uit 1887, en het is in het park in 1959 geplaatst!

Er zijn geen contemporaine bronnen over Sappho's leven. De belangrijkste bron voor haar biografie is de tiende-eeuwse Byzantijnse encyclopedie Suda, ongeveer vijftienhonderd jaar na Sappho. De Suda meldt dat zij haar floruit (bloeitijd) bereikte tussen 612 v.Chr. en 608 v.Chr. en dus rond 630 v.Chr. moet zijn geboren. Haar sterfdatum is onbekend (omstreeks 580, 570 v.Chr.?). Ze was afkomstig uit Mytilini, de hoofdstad van het eiland Lesbos, dochter van Scamander en Cleïs.

Haar familie maakte deel uit van de lokale aristocratie en was actief betrokken bij de politiek in Lesbos. Als gevolg van de staatsgreep op het eiland na de opstand door Pittacus verbleef Sappho in het buitenland (Syracuse), maar uiteindelijk keerde ze in 581 v.Chr. naar Lesbos terug.

Sappho schreef in het Aeolische dialect van het Grieks, voornamelijk lyrische poëzie, liederen om gezongen te worden onder begeleiding van de lier. Haar werk kenmerkt zich door de verfijning van warme gevoelens. In een heel eigen stijl, getuigend van grote originaliteit, bezong zij haar eigen vrouwelijke wereld: de vertrouwelijke omgang met meisjes, muziek, feest, liefde, de natuurbeleving. De "diepste roerselen van haar ziel" wist zij zeer direct te verwoorden.

Naast deze persoonlijke gedichten schreef zij ook epische poëzie, epigrammen en bruiloftsgedichten.

Sappho's lyrische gedichten bevatten de oudste bewaard gebleven persoonlijke expressie in de literatuur: eerdere poëzie, zoals die van Hesiodus en Homerus, handelde over de werken van goden en helden, of waren lofzangen voor de eredienst. Ook als musicus schijnt Sappho belangrijke innovaties te hebben gedaan: aan haar wordt de uitvinding van het plectrum toegeschreven en ze zou een aantal muzikale modi hebben bedacht.

This year is a bit puzzling, because the statue was made in 1929 after an original from 1887, and it was placed in the park in 1959!

There are no contemporary sources on Sappho's life. The main source for her biography is the tenth-century Byzantine encyclopedia Suda, about fifteen hundred years after Sappho. The Suda reports that it reached its floruit (flowering time) between 612 BC. and 608 BC. and so around 630 BC. must have been born. Her date of death is unknown (around 580, 570 BC?). She was from Mytilini, the capital of the island of Lesvos, daughter of Scamander and Cleïs.

Her family was part of the local aristocracy and was actively involved in politics in Lesvos. As a result of the coup d'état on the island after the rebellion by Pittacus, Sappho stayed abroad (Syracuse), but eventually returned in 581 BC. back to Lesvos.

Sappho wrote songs in the Aeolian dialect of Greek, mainly lyrical poetry, to be sung to the accompaniment of the lyre. Her work is characterized by the refinement of warm feelings. Sappho's lyrics contain the oldest surviving personal expression in literature: earlier poetry, such as that of Hesiod and Homer, dealt with the works of gods and heroes, or were hymns for worship. As a musician, Sappho also seems to have made important innovations: she is credited with the invention of the plectrum and she is said to have invented a number of musical modes.
