In 1905 werd aan de Veeartsenijstraat 55 in Utrecht een manege gebouwd van de faculteit dierengeneeskunde van de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht naar ontwerp van Rijksbouwmeester C.H. Peters.

In 1994 werd het een theater voor het Toneelgezelschap De Paardenkathedraal. Onder leiding van architect Mart van Schijndel bleef de grote ruimte onaangetast, en werden er aanpassingen en verbeteringen aangebracht. De opening was op 20 februari 1994 met Macbeth van Shakespeare. Afhankelijk van de opstelling van de flexibele tribune heeft de zaal een capaciteit van maximaal 180 bezoekers. Ook het speelvlak is flexibel en is tot 15 meter breed. Voorstellingen worden vrijwel uitsluitend door het eigen gezelschap gebracht. De Paardenkathedraal werd opgevolgd door De Utrechtse Spelen en vervolgens door Theater Utrecht.

Vanwege zijn karakteristieke gevel en neogotische ramen stond de manege in de volksmond bekend als "de Paardenkathedraal". Het rechthoekige gebouw heeft een zeer decoratief interieur. Na jarenlange verwaarlozing werd het in 1985 grondig opgeknapt. Een zogenaamde Cascosubsidie heeft het gebouw uiteindelijk van de ondergang gered. De manege kreeg een sociaal- culturele bestemming, maar het duurde tot 1993 voordat deze bestemming daadwerkelijk gerealiseerd werd. Tot die tijd werd het gebouw gebruikt door de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht als opslag voor proefschriften.

In 1994 it became a theater for the Theater Company De Paardenkathedraal. Under the direction of architect Mart van Schijndel, the large space remained untouched, and adjustments and improvements were made. The opening was on February 20, 1994 with Shakespeare's Macbeth.
