't Weegje, consists of grass, reed and wetlands. The natural lake is located in the middle of the nature reserve. This lake was created in 1825 by the excavation of peat for peat extraction.
't Weegje is a semi-enclosed and wetland area with high ecological values. An alternation of forest, water, open greenery and a small sand strip along the water. It is a grassy and swampy area with pedestrian, bicycle and nature trails. The area has a great diversity of flora and fauna. Winter guests such as gulls and petrels use the lake as a resting and foraging area. Many godwits can be seen here in winter and spring. You can also see blue herons, cormorants, lapwings, redshanks, grebes and black terns. It is a true paradise for many water and meadow bird species all year round. That is why you will often encounter bird watchers here.
For years, there was a bird watching wall at the place where Godwits have been spotted for years. In 2021, a completely new bird watching wall will be built on the other side of the lake area.
