En 1903, l’expulsion de France des congrégations religieuses non autorisées amène de nombreux maristes à chercher refuge à l’étranger. Plus de 76 frères s’établissent alors au Québec. Cette année-là, la province mariste d’Amérique du Nord est créée. Elle est divisée en deux provinces distinctes en 1911, une canadienne et l’autre américaine, en conséquence de la croissance rapide des effectifs de la communauté. À cette époque, 229 frères maristes sont au Canada, présents dans 35 établissements, essentiellement au Québec. L’expansion de la communauté se poursuit ensuite dans la province, notamment dans les régions de Montréal, de la Gaspésie et du Saguenay. En 1929, la maison provinciale, le juvénat et le scolasticat sont transférés dans un nouvel édifice à Iberville sur les bords de la rivière Richelieu.
