The Robe limestone walled Customs House was built in 1863 to cater for the thousands of Chinese that came to Australia to work the Victorian goldfields. They disembarked at Robe and walked overland to Ballarat and Bendigo to avoid payment of a poll tax imposed by the Victoria Government. In later years the building was used as the local council chambers and in 1969 was converted into a museum.
