Het Amsterdams Verlaat, waar het sluiswachtershuisje staat, werd in 1436 gebouwd. Het maakte deel uit van het sluizencomplex van Haven en Gouwe. In 1954 werd de sluis, tegelijk met de Havensluis, buiten werking gesteld.
De laatste brugwachter was Hubertus Engelhard die naast het bedienden van de bruggen en sluizen rond het Amsterdams Verlaat bij verdiende met het lappen van schoenen. Hubertus overleed in 1954 waarna het huisje in verval raakte en uiteindelijk werd gesloopt.
In 2006 werd de Stichting Poorters van het Amsterdams Verlaat opgericht. Door hulp uit het bedrijfsleven werd de herbouw van het sluiswachtershuisje mede mogelijk gemaakt. Begin 2008 werd het feestelijk in gebruik genomen. De zitjes bij het sluiswachtershuisje worden vaak gebruikt door buurtbewoners en toeristen. Ook is het huisje regelmatig open om te bezoeken.

The Amsterdams Verlaat, where the lockkeeper's house is located, was built in 1436. It was part of the lock complex of Haven and Gouwe. In 1954 the lock was made inoperative at the same time as the Havensluis.
The last bridge operator was Hubertus Engelhard who, in addition to servicing the bridges and locks around the Amsterdams Verlaat, made extra money by patching shoes. Hubertus died in 1954, after which the house fell into disrepair and was eventually demolished.
In 2006 the Poorters van het Amsterdams Verlaat Foundation was established. Thanks to help from the business community, the rebuilding of the lockkeeper's house was made possible. In early 2008 it was officially opened. The seats at the lock keeper's house are often used by local residents and tourists. The house is also regularly open to visit.
