The Courthouse was officially opened in February 1865 replacing the existing 1862 building which had proved inadequate. The building was constructed using pink Dolomite with squared and gauged quoins and arches. Almost as soon as it opened there were complaints about the acoustics, lack of shelter for those waiting and cramped room for court officials. The front wings were added in 1877 and the front verandah in 1880. Since 1975 the building has been owned by the National Trust
