Azumuthal Analemmatic Sundial - Trieste, Italy - Sundials on Waymarking.com

This is a sundial in the plaza in front of the bourse building in Trieste. The sun was very important to the operations of the stock exchange. There was a hole in the wall where the sun beam would come through at noon, and there was a scale on the floor to measure it. This sundial aligns with that sun beam's path outside the building.

In order to use the sundial, a person must stand in the center and look at where his or her shadow falls. There are directions in the pavers in both English and Italian.

In English:
"To tell the time, stand on the central line next to the current date and your shadow will indicate the solar time.
To obtain the civil time, add or subtract the minutes indicated. For the summer time, add one hour."

The zodiac signs signify how far forward or back the person should stand, depending on the time of year, in order for the reading to be precise.
