"In the morning of 23rd August, the Germans advanced towards Gozée coming out of the woods of La Grattière, Aulne and du Prince. During the night of 23rd to 24th August following the battle, the church of Gozée was set up as a temporary hospital to receive the wounded. Following the fighting, and often with the help of the inhabitants, the bodies of French and German soldiers were buried where they had fallen in temporary graves, either individual or communal.

Around noon, the north of the village falls into enemy hands. The Germans came in from all sides. The French then receive the order to withdraw to prepare for the assault. As the battle rages on and success seems compromised, the French resume the offensive. The French shells cause many German losses. The German supply convoys were forced to retreat as far as Marchienne-au-Pont and Marcinelle. German reinforcements keep arriving. Around 6pm, the German encirclement movement intensifies through the farm of Baudribus and Marbaix-la-Tour. The French retreat towards Thuillies. Given the numerical superiority of the 2nd army, the village fell into German hands.

At the end of a solemn mass in memory of the soldiers, on 10 August 1924, the war memorial on the Place de Gozée was inaugurated. It is the work of Hector Brognon. In 1964, due to work in the school, parts of the monument were removed and placed in the current communal cemetery."
