The Zusters van Liefde van Tilburg ("Sisters of Charity of Tilburg") settled on September 29, 1897 at the request of pastor J. de Croon in Mariapolder-Hank. The monastery was made possible financially by a testamentary decision of former mayor J.H. Stael. Martinus Maas from Vught built it for 30,000 guilders.
The sisters started charity work, with an evening craft school, a girls' patronage and the care of men in need.
The oldest part of the house dates from 1896, as shown by the facing brick. After the monastery was renovated internally in 1934, new classrooms were added in 1939. The sisters furnished the old classrooms for sewing lessons.
In 1960 the monastery was closed and the sisters moved to Geertruidenberg, from where they continued to operate the nursery school. The Vita Nova printing office was located in the building between 1972 and 1993. In 1989 the monastery and the modern extensions were given a residential purpose.
The brick, neo-Renaissance main building has a facing brick with the text:
"FUNDAT J.H. STAEL CONSUL DUSSEN 1895. AEDIFICAT J.H. DE CROON PAROCHUS 1896"
In a beautiful stepped gable is a statue of O.L. Vrouw van Rust. ("Our Lady of Rust"). It was made in 1899 by sculptor Heinrich Vos from Emmerich and donated by the couple J. van Steen-Staal.
To the right of the main building was the school, a building with two stepped gables in the same style as the monastery. The Lourdes grotto in the garden dates from 1913.
