This is a small, blue-painted, shield-shaped boundary marker inscribed ‘Borough of Poplar Boundary 1900’. It is fixed to the wall of the former Morpeth Castle pub at first floor level. Established here by 1860 and once a Truman’s Brewery house, this pub closed in 1990 and has been converted to private residential use.

The marker was placed here to mark the boundary between two London Boroughs. Poplar (to the south) and Hackney (to the north). The Metropolitan Borough of Poplar was established in 1900, the year this marker was placed, and lasted until 1965 when it became part of the new London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

The marker also served the purpose of marking the boundary between the parishes of St Mary Stratford-le-Bow and St John at Hackney.
