In 1879, the city of Detroit purchased a 983-acre island in the Detroit River for $200,000. In 1883, Frederick Law Olmstead created the master plan that would transform the island into America's largest city owned island park. The island is accessible to the city of Detroit via the General Douglas MacArthur Bridge.
The island's most popular attractions include the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, William Livingstone Lighthouse, Scott Memorial Fountain and Belle Isle Nature Zoo. The park also contains 200-acres of woodlands, numerous fishing piers, bicycle and nature trails, handball/racquetball/basketball courts, a 9-hole golf course, baseball diamonds, tennis courts, a half-mile swimming beach with water slide, picnic shelters, the kid's kingdom playscape, and numerous historical monuments.
Belle Isle remains the gem of Detroit's parks system with something for everyone.
