La jeune française originaire de Bigorre a été témoin de dix-huit apparitions mariales à la grotte de Massabielle entre le 11 février et le 16 juillet 1858.
Bernadette Soubirous est née à Lourdes, alors petite ville des Pyrénées, le 7 janvier 1844 dans une famille de meuniers. Le 11 février 1858, Bernadette Soubirous, âgée de 14 ans, part du Cachot avec sa sœur et une amie pour aller chercher du bois mort au bord du Gave, à Massabielle. Dans le creux du rocher, Bernadette aperçoit une «dame en blanc»: «Voulez-vous me faire la grâce de venir ici pendant quinze jours». La Vierge Marie vient ainsi à sa rencontre 18 fois entre février et juillet. Au milieu de la quinzaine, le 24 et le 25 février, Bernadette reçoit un message «Priez pour les pécheurs », et la Dame lui demande «d’aller boire à la fontaine et de s’y laver»… Après avoir gratté la terre boueuse au fond de la Grotte, Bernadette découvre une source.
À travers ces rencontres surprenantes, Bernadette Soubirous comprend, grâce à Marie, que Dieu s’intéresse à elle, qu’il se fait proche des plus pauvres. Pendant toute cette période, Bernadette ne se laisse pas intimider, elle reste simple et libre.
À l’âge de 22 ans, Bernadette entre chez les sœurs de la charité à Nevers, et au cours de ces treize années elle sera successivement aide-infirmière, responsable de l’infirmerie, sacristine et le plus souvent malade elle-même. Bernadette a un caractère joyeux, elle est disponible à ce qu’on lui demande. «Je ne vivrai pas un instant que je ne le passe en aimant», écrit-elle.
Elle fait de longs séjours à l’infirmerie car elle est atteinte d’une tumeur à un genou et d’une tuberculose pulmonaire qui la font beaucoup souffrir. Elle meurt le 16 avril 1879, à 35 ans. Elle est inhumée dans la chapelle Saint Joseph au milieu du jardin. Elle sera canonisée, déclarée sainte le 8 décembre 1933.

She is buried in the Saint Joseph chapel in the middle of the garden. She will be canonized, declared a saint on December 8, 1933.
