Father Riff took this project to heart and made a collection in all the houses of the parish. Once the funds had been collected, he chose a site from which the Virgin would dominate Hayange, the valley, and the region; then accompanied by Father Leglise, he went to the hills of Vaudemont, to Notre-Dame de Sion, of which he chose the Virgin as his model. He ordered it.

Work began on May 19, 1903 and was completed at the end of October of the same year. The statue alone cost 12,000 Francs (€ 1,819.37). Cast iron cast in local factories, weighing 6 ½ tons, it stands 7 meters high on a 14 meter high granite pedestal.

Father Riff died on Good Friday 1904 before its completion. It was therefore Abbé Besnard who prepared the inauguration which took place on October 2, 1904. For many years, every August 15, Notre-Dame de Hayange became a place of pilgrimage.

The bombardments spared the statue, but time left its mark of rust on the building. To restore it, a public subscription was launched. Donations poured in from everywhere, in particular that of Jean-Paul Belmondo, main actor of the film The Heir whose first images show the Virgin of Hayange. The restoration took place in 1982.

L'abbé Riff mourut le vendredi saint 1904 avant son achèvement. C'est donc l'Abbé Besnard qui prépara l'inauguration qui eut lieu le 2 octobre 1904. Durant de longues années, tous les 15 août, Notre-Dame de Hayange devint un lieu de pèlerinage.

Les bombardements ont épargné la statue, mais le temps laissa son empreinte de rouille sur l'édifice. Pour le restaurer, une souscription publique fut lancée. Les dons affluèrent de partout, notamment celui de Jean-Paul Belmondo, acteur principal du film l'Héritier dont les premières images montrent la Vierge de Hayange. La restauration eut lieu en 1982.
