Manuel Gomes Guerreiro was a Portuguese academic and forestry engineer. He was the first rector of the University of the Algarve, having been considered, for his career in teaching and scientific research, as one of the main Algarve figures of the 20th century.

He was born not far from the spot where this memorial can be seen, in a small hamlet known as Vargens, in the vicinity of the village of Querença.

The plaque was placed in a spring wall near Querença. It's a bronze plaque with his image and the year he was born (1919) and the year he died (2000).
