EN: The Gornergratbahn is a rack railroad of just over 9 kilometers in length. It runs from Zermatt at 1604 meters above sea level to the Gornergrat at 3089 meters, making it the second highest mountain railroad in Europe after the Jungfrau Railway. It was opened in 1898 and was the first mountain railroad in Switzerland to be electrified from the beginning. The railroad is mainly used for tourism, and the fares are accordingly several times higher than other comparable public transport in the area.
The Zermatt station is the bottom station of the Gornergratbahn. It is located just opposite the station of the Matterhorn-Gotthard railroad, which connects Zermatt with the valley. The modern single-story building leads to a covered boarding area. About a hundred meters behind the station are the engine sheds.
DE: Die Gornergratbahn ist eine Zahnradbahn von etwas über 9 Kilometern Länge. Sie führt von Zermatt auf 1604 Metern über Meer zum Gornergrat auf 3089 Meter, damit ist sie nach der Jungfraubahn die zweithöchste Bergbahn in Europa. Sie wurde 1898 eröffnet und war als erste Bergbahn der Schweiz seit Beginn elektrifiziert. Die Bahn wird vor allem touristisch genutzt, die Fahrpreise betragen dementsprechend das mehrfache vergleichbarer öffentlicher Verkehrsmittel in der Gegend.
Die Station Zermatt ist die Talstation der Gornergratbahn. Sie befindet sich gleich gegenüber dem Bahnhof der Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn, die Zermatt mit dem Tal verbindet. Das moderne einstöckige Gebäude führt zu einen gedeckten Einstiegsbereich. Etwa hundert Meter hinter dem Bahnhof befinden sich die Lokschuppen.
