To mark the centenary of Schweitzer's birth in 1975, the Dutch Albert Schweitzer Foundation commissioned the artwork. The statue is located on the Brink, in front of the former Schweitzer center which was disbanded in 1983.

*Was born in 1875 in Germany, in Alsace which was annexed to France
*Friend of Albert Einstein
*Big fan of Bach
*Did not study to become a doctor until he was 30
*Jumped to Lambarene in Gabon for the first time in 1913
*Taken prisoner of war in the First World War
*Built his life's work, the hospital at Lambarene in Gabon, from 1923, after returning from World War 1
*Funded his work with organ recitals and lectures on ethics
*Respect for Life - his life motto
*Won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952
*Went 90 years old and died in Gabon in 1965
