The Tower was erected between 1900 and 1904 to commemorate the first sighting and naming of Mt Gambier by Lieutenant James Grant on December 3rd 1800.
In early 1900 a committee was formed to raise the funds for the building of the tower with the foundation stone being laid on December 3rd, however work stalled due to lack of funds and did not resume until 1903.
The 9m high tower on a 3.5m base was made of locally quarried dolomite being dragged on a sled from the Devil's Punchbowl by teams of four horses. The tower was officially opened on April 27th 1904 by Sir Samuel Way
