North of W. 79th Street South, west of Highway 81, is this large park that serves the community of Haysville. The entrance design has a lot of meaning, detailed in the information below.
Dorner Park offers so many recreational and relaxation opportunties, something the city takes great pride in.
A sign near the playground says this about the park:
Randal L. "Randy" Dorner 6/26/1956 - 11/23/2016 Husband to Sandy, Father to Frank, Grandmother to Gwendilyn, Isabelle, Maverick, and Maxwell and friend to Many. Randy was employed with the City of Haysville in 1989, beginning as a park worker and rising through the ranks to serve the community as Public Works Director for 20 years. During his time with the City, he worked countless hours making Haysville a better place to live. Even as his health declined, Randy's passion and dedication to the City remained unwavering. Haysville would not be the thriving community it is today without Randy's integral role in our journey.
Randy's goal was to develop this very park as his last project before retirement. When he yearned for relief from the rigors of office work, Randy sought solace in a piece of heavy equipment, working dirt around this complex as a way to relax. Randy envisioned this park as a space to be enjoyed by the community for many years to come. Those he left behind are proud to honor Randy's legacy by seeing his vision come to fruition.
The bridge on the adjacent bike path "Dorner Lane" is the final project Randy completed with the City.
The 6 trees planted behind the entrance to the park represent his family: Sandy, Frank, Gwendilyn, Isabelle, Maverick, and Maxwell.
The 26 pipes at the park entryway represent his years of service with the City.
The text to the left (see gallery) is an excerpt from a speech Randy proudly gave describing what the Public Works Department did for the community. Haysville Public Works Department - "We are the They".
