"Si les chevrons de sable (noir) sur fond or sont bien les armes de Sainte-Waudru et les armes primitives du Comté de Hainaut, la croix d'argent sur fond de sinople (vert) semble résister à l'analyse. Certains pensent que ces couleurs furent celles de Madelgaire, d'autres veulent y voir un lien avec la maison de Savoie ou à la Gascogne. L'hypothèse de la maison de Savoie a été avancée par Amé Demeuldre pour qui la croix d'argent serait à rapprocher des armes de Thomas II de Savoie, époux de la Comtesse Jeanne de Constantinople. Le vert et le blanc sont également les couleurs de Saint Patrick. Aucune de ces hypothèses ne semble toutefois satisfaisante. Ces armoiries furent maintenues, le 13 avril 1818, par un diplôme émané du conseil supérieur de noblesse. C'est à cette date que l'écu fut timbré d'une couronne d'or. Le 18 juin 1838, Léopold Ier promulgue un arrêté qui autorise la commune de Soignies à utiliser ses armes, considérant qu'il est suffisamment établi par une tradition immémoriale que la ville de Soignies est en possession depuis une époque très reculée d'armoiries particulières'."

"If the chevrons Sable (black) on a gold background are indeed the arms of Sainte-Waudru and the primitive arms of the County of Hainaut, the cross Argent on a Vert (green) background seems to resist analysis. Some think that these colours were those of Madelgaire, others want to see a link with the House of Savoy or Gascony. The hypothesis of the House of Savoy was put forward by Amé Demeuldre, for whom the silver cross should be linked to the arms of Thomas II of Savoy, husband of Countess Jeanne of Constantinople.
