THEIR NAME
LIVETH FOR EVERMORE

Retford War Memorial
was unveiled by Sir Frederick Milner on the 14th September 1921, designed by architect Leonard W. Barnard F.R.I.B.A. and executed in Stancliffe stone, by R.L. Boulton & Sons, the memorial is in the form of an Eleanor Cross, an octagonal structure of late Gothic design, it embodies the idea of a Roman milestone showing the distance in miles of some of the more important places where the two local regiments, the Sherwood Foresters and the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry, were in action in the 1914 - 1918 First World War. On the eight lower panels are the names of the men who gave their lives in that war.

In 1951 bronze plaques were added to the memorial giving the names of persons who dies in the 1939-1945 War. These plaques were unveiled and dedicated on the 6th May 1951. The entire cost of these plaques was met by the Retford and National Savings Committee.

The new Korean plaque was donated by Retford Memorials, who were responsible for the memorial's restoration, which was made possible through public donations and funding. Patrick Mercer O.B.E. MP re-dedicated the war memorial on the 17thAugust 2008.
