Séminaire-de-Saint Sulpice

Ce séminaire, dont les origines remontent au XVIIe siècle, constitue un exemple rare et exceptionnel d'architecture classique de la Nouvelle-France. Depuis sa construction en 1685, l'édifice sert de résidence aux Prêtres de Saint-Sulpice, qui furent les seigneurs de l'île de Montréal jusqu'à l'abolition du régime seigneurial et qui contribuèrent à ce titre au développement spirituel et civil de la ville. Il se distingue par son plan en forme de U, son portail central et son horloge, qui rappellent avec éloquence la grande tradition classique française. L'aile est, ajoutée entre 1850 et 1854, présente une allure nettement néoclassique par sa maçonnerie de pierres de taille et son large fronton. Le remarquable jardin conventuel situé à l'arrière du séminaire fut aussi aménagé au Régime français. S'inscrivant dans la tradition de la Renaissance française, il servait de potager, mais aussi de lieu de méditation, de promenade et d'agrément. Cette longue association avec les Sulpiciens fait de ce séminaire et de son jardin des témoins privilégiés de l'œuvre de cette communauté religieuse et des débuts de l'histoire de la colonie.

St. Sulpice Seminary

Dating from the 17th century, this seminary is a rare and striking example of the classical architecture of New France. Since its construction in 1685, the building has served as a residence for the Sulpicians, who, as seigneurs of the Island of Montréal until the end of the seigneurial regime, played a key role in the spiritual and civil development of the city. It is distinguished by its U-shaped plan, central portal, and its clock, all eloquent reminders of the French classical tradition. The east wing, added between 1850 and 1854, is strongly neo-classical with its cut-stone masonry and broad pediment. The remarkable monastic garden behind the seminary also dates from the French Regime. In the French Renaissance tradition, it served both as a vegetable garden and as a place to walk, meditate, and pray. Long associated with the Sulpicians, the seminary and its garden are exceptional witnesses to the work of this religious community and to the early history of the colony.
