Le parti choisi est celui d'un "théâtre à l'italienne" : un hémicycle couvert d'un toit. La salle relativement petite (300 à 400 personnes) présente alors deux niveaux de balcons, un grand foyer, un équipement scénique complet ainsi que deux loges réservées à l'avant-scène pour la municipalité et l'Etat-Major. La duchesse de Berry se voit également offrir une loge et un appartement.

Le théâtre municipal est ensuite profondément remanié en 1900 par les architectes Chevallier et Loison, à la manière des plus belles salles parisiennes de son temps. Les architectes conçoivent une façade sur mer complètement nouvelle avec un vaste hall, ouvrant sur la mer par cinq grandes baies.

A l'extérieur, les façades s'ornent du style "Beaux Arts", en vogue à l'époque, tandis que l'intérieur est redécoré en s'inspirant librement de l'époque rocaille (XVIIIe siècle). Un décor en staff orne ainsi les salles du théâtre de Dieppe, ponctué d'ors, de plafonds peints, de masques, cartouches et de formes chantournées (faites de courbes et de contre courbes). Dans la salle de spectacle, certaines loges sont supprimées pour pouvoir accueillir un plus grand nombre de spectateurs. Comme au théâtre de l'Athénée à Paris, le plafond peint (les muses) s'orne d'un grand lustre tandis les loges d'avant-scène sont encadrées de figures de caryatides, personnifiant le théâtre et la musique.

Durant toutes ces années, où la station balnéaire fut à son apogée, le théâtre de Dieppe reçut parmi les plus grands artistes de son temps : Rossini, Meyerbeer, Liszt et notamment Camille Saint-Saëns, qui par sa participation active à la vie culturelle de la cité, laissa le plus de traces dans l'histoire de cet édifice.

Endommagé pendant la guerre, le théâtre reçut un "rhabillage" de ses façades en ciment dans les années 1950. Accueillant ensuite un cinéma, il ferma ses portes en 1961 pour les rouvrir en 2002 afin d'abriter le mémorial du 19 août 1942."

As at the Athénée theater in Paris, the painted ceiling (the muses) is adorned with a large chandelier while the proscenium boxes are framed by figures of caryatids, personifying theater and music.

During all these years, when the seaside resort was at its peak, the Dieppe theater received among the greatest artists of its time: Rossini, Meyerbeer, Liszt and in particular Camille Saint-Saëns, who through his active participation in the cultural life of the city, left the most traces in the history of this building.

Damaged during the war, the theater received a "refurbishment" of its cement facades in the 1950s. Then welcoming a cinema, it closed its doors in 1961 to reopen them in 2002 to house the memorial of August 19, 1942. "
