"The presence of organs on the rood screens was frequent because this position made it easier to use the instrument, while offices were celebrated exclusively in the choir. The organs located on a tribune at the back of the nave n 'did not offer this convenience. Having become very rare in France, the rood screen organs are still numerous in England, Belgium and the Netherlands.
The presence of an organ in the church of Arques-la-Bataille has been documented since the end of the 16th century. The registers of the factory mention its purchase in 1585, and the pledges of organists and blowers throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Several graffiti testify to the presence of this instrument on the rood screen. A surveyor survey established in 1822 mentions "that before the last revolution, on this rood screen, was an organ set".
The instrument which is there today was designed and produced by the maker Michel Giroud who installed it in 1997. This rood screen organ project, exceptional for its rarity, required long studies which were carried out. under the direction of Yves Lescroart, then regional curator of historical monuments, and Philippe Gautrot, deputy mayor of Arques-la-Bataille.
This instrument immediately played a role of primary importance in the artistic approach of the Bach Academy, and was even the primary motivation of its creators, Philippe Gautrot and Jean-Paul Combet. Fully integrated into a global approach, both instrumental and vocal, he escapes this isolation which too often confines listening to the organ repertoire to a specialized audience.

"La présence d'orgues sur les jubés fut fréquente car cette position permettait une commodité d'usage de l'instrument, alors que les offices étaient célébrés exclusivement dans le chœur. Les orgues situés sur une tribune en fond de nef n'offraient pas cette commodité. Devenus très rare en France, les orgues de jubé restent nombreux en Angleterre, en Belgique ou aux Pays-Bas.
La présence d’un orgue dans l’église d’Arques-la-Bataille est attestée depuis la fin du XVIe siècle. Les registres de la fabrique mentionnent son achat en 1585, et les gages des organistes et souffleurs tout au long des XVIIe et XVIIIe siécles. Plusieurs graffiti témoignent de la présence de cet instrument sur le jubé. Un relevé de géomètre établi en 1822 mentionne « qu’avant la dernière révolution, sur ce jubé, était un jeu d’orgues ».
L’instrument qui s’y trouve aujourd’hui a été conçu et réalisé le facteur Michel Giroud qui l’a installé en 1997. Ce projet d’orgue de jubé, exceptionnel par sa rareté, a nécessité de longues études qui ont été conduites sous la direction d’Yves Lescroart, alors conservateur régional des monuments historiques, et Philippe Gautrot, adjoint au maire d’Arques-la-Bataille.
Cet instrument a aussitôt joué un rôle de première importance dans la démarche artistique de l’Académie Bach, et fut même la motivation première des créateurs de celle-ci, Philippe Gautrot et Jean-Paul Combet. Pleinement intégré dans une démarche globale, tant instrumentale que vocale, il échappe à cet isolement qui confine trop souvent l’écoute du répertoire d’orgue à un public spécialisé.
