" The church building of the Protestant Congregation is located at the Dorpsstraat 2, in the middle of Laren. A few hundred meters from here, on the Kloosterweg, stood until 1835 the forerunner of this church, the chapel of Laren. From 1684 this church had served, then it was worn to the thread and had to be demolished.
The congregation did not have enough money to build a new church. They turned to KoningWillem, that's how it was then. On the basis of a law of 1824 the Empire organized and financed the building of churches. In 1834 they could start with the construction of what was then called the Waterstaatskerk because the Rijkswaterstaat was in charge of the construction. Many Waterstaatskerken have risen in the east of the Netherlands. However, there are not many more (Breedenbroek, Gelselaar, Haarlo, Hengelo, Hummelo and Laren). The most famous waterstaatskerk in the Netherlands is the Mozes en Aäron church in Amsterdam.
The church in Laren was designed by architect B. van Zalingen from Deventer. As was common in those days, the church was designed in the neoclassical style. The pulpit was located on the south side (Verwoldse weg). The benches stood in a semicircular shape around the pulpit. The church was opened in 1835. "
