Until August 6, 1993, the Carmel monastery is in use as a monastery of the Discalced Carmelites.
Architect Arjen Witteveen designed this first and contemplative Frisian monastery in 1935 in carrel-shaped after medieval examples with a courtyard garden and a large walled castle garden.
The facade looks austere, but inside the building has a surprisingly intimate atmosphere, also through the cloisters and vistas to the gardens.
Karmelklooster Drachten is a unique location in Friesland for meetings, celebrating an anniversary or birthday, weddings, guided tours, High Tea, reunions, staying overnight with a group or a mourning ceremony.
The Carmel Monastery is also a Dutch National Monument.
