Sculptor and metalworker Albert Paley’s permanent mark on the campus of RIT was made when his towering “Sentinel” was dedicated in 2003. Located at the main entrance to RIT, this piece rises 73 feet and weighs over 110 tons.

The Sentinel is a huge multimillion dollar sculpture that represents then RIT President Albert Simone's attempts to draw interest and create a cultural landmark at RIT's Campus outside Rochester New York.
Created in 2003 during a huge renovation and increase in size of the entire academic campus, The Sentinel is located outside the main Administration Circle near the enterance to the RIT campus.
Sculpture Albert Paley was born in Philadelphia, and earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. He came to Rochester in 1969 as a faculty member in RIT’s School of American Crafts. Paley also served on the faculty of SUNY College at Brockport, and is now Distinguished Professor holding the Charlotte Fredericks Mowris Professorship in Contemporary Crafts at the School for American Crafts and a board member of the International Sculpture Center.
