Cette communauté est issue d'un mouvement de réforme visant à revenir à l'idéal bénédictin organisé autour du travail manuel et de la prière. Ces moines sont aussi dits « trappistes » en référence au monastère de La Trappe, en France, où l'ordre des cisterciens a été réformé au XVIIe siècle. Le 3 mai 1881, la congrégation de Saint-Sulpice cède un vaste terrain de l'ancienne seigneurie du Lac-des-Deux-Montagnes aux moines trappistes de l'abbaye française de Notre-Dame de Bellefontaine. Les deux premières ailes du monastère actuel sont bâties de 1889 à 1891, et la troisième en 1892, année où la Trappe d'Oka devient une abbaye autonome. L'église est érigée de 1895 à 1897 grâce à une donation importante de René Rousseau, prêtre sulpicien. Une cinquième aile abrite l'hôtellerie. L'abbaye est détruite par les flammes en juillet 1902, puis à nouveau en décembre 1916. The Notre-Dame-du-Lac-of-Oka abbey is of heritage interest for its historical value. It is associated with a community of monks of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance order. This community is the result of a reform movement aimed at returning to the Benedictine ideal organized around manual work and prayer. These monks are also called “Trappists” in reference to the monastery of La Trappe, in France, where the Cistercian order was reformed in the 17th century. On May 3, 1881, the congregation of Saint-Sulpice ceded a vast land of the former seigneury of Lac-des-Deux-Montagnes to the Trappist monks of the French abbey of Notre-Dame de Bellefontaine. The first two wings of the current monastery were built from 1889 to 1891, and the third in 1892, when the Trappe d'Oka became an autonomous abbey. The church was built from 1895 to 1897 thanks to a large donation from René Rousseau, a Sulpician priest. A fifth wing houses the hotel industry. The abbey was destroyed by flames in July 1902, then again in December 1916. The stone walls were recovered in the reconstruction work directed by the architect Joseph-Henri Caron (1878-1954). In 2009, the community left the abbey of Oka. The Notre-Dame-du-Lac abbey therefore bears witness to the presence for more than a century in Oka of the first trappist community in Quebec.
