The site of San Cibrao de Las is one of the most unique and interesting forts in Galicia. A circumstance that in its day led the Department of Culture to bet on creating in this enclosure, located in the municipalities of San Amaro and Punxín, the Castrexa Archaeological Park of Culture. Lansbricae , is part of the patrimonial network promoted in its day to disseminate the resources of Galicia together with enclaves such as Campo Lameiro -centralized in the petroglyphs- or Lugo -in the Roman vestiges-.
To continue adding value to the site, the Xunta launched a new archaeological excavation and consolidation project in San Cibrao de Las in September. A project to which 78,408 euros were allocated and which is currently being executed by the winning company: Terra Arqueos. From Culture, it opted to influence the work in this space because it was " two more senlleiros castros from our autonomous community, one two more well-known public pole, and also two that receives a greater number of visits during the year." With this new action, the aim is to excavate and consolidate a neighborhood of the castro "to expand the resources that have been discovered and also allow the Archaeological Park of Castrexa Culture (PACC) to be revitalized with a free archaeological activity". Among the objectives pursued with this new intervention in San Cibrao de Las are to expose an entire neighborhood of the archaeological site, as well as launch a new visiting itinerary through a tour of the side streets. It "will allow us to understand and explain the structure and creation of the domestic space not inside the castro", as indicated in the report on the project promoted by the Xunta de Galicia. Once the excavation and consolidation campaign is completed, the identification and investigation of the different housing units will be completed, with the different rooms and patios that make up the neighborhood.
Anthropomorphic sculptureThe archaeological campaign is bringing to light important findings, according to the entries in the excavations notebook that can be consulted on the PACC website. These include a granite sculpture of an anthropomorphic head and a trisquel decoration «Both to fit the wall of the house where they appeared as a decorative and / or symbolic element. e dating from the final moment of the occupation of the Castro, Secules I-II d. C. » . Underground pipes so that rainwater does not enter the houses, hand mills, ceramics, a circular kitchen and many metal pieces are among the materials found to date. From the thick walls of the neighborhood's houses to the discovery of a trisquelThe excavation and consolidation campaign that is being carried out in Las is currently in its first phase and the forecast is to finish the archaeological works during this month. According to Yolanda Álvarez González, of the company awarded the project, “in principle, excavation will be carried out until the end of November. Once this first phase is finished, the consolidation of the area will be undertaken, in which we will invest about three weeks. Before the end of December, the work will be finished ", according to the coordinator of the project developed by Terra Arqueos.
Although there are still days to complete the work, Yolanda Álvarez is satisfied: «The campaign has been profitable in every way. We worked in a series of houses from the second phase of occupation of the castro and we were very lucky with the remains found. They are walls with a lot of power, one meter and up to a meter and a half wide, and for educational visits it is much easier and more visual to have this type of vestiges. When it comes to explaining, it is better to see the material than to have to interpret it. Many materials have also appeared. Among them are quite a few ceramic pieces - " mostly from the Castrexa period but also from the Roman period" -, personal ornaments-fibulae, necklace beads and other elements-, metallic materials and outstanding elements such as anthropomorphic sculpture or the trisquel. Yolanda Álvarez highlights this finding: "It is not a piece that is found much in the forts."
