The monastery of Santa María de Melón, an Asset of Cultural Interest, has just entered the Red List of Heritage, a map of civil society Hispania Nostra that, although it is not an official body, its lists are very taken into account the owners of the goods and the councils to which they belong. It is the fifth property of the province that is included in this map that collects the patrimonial elements "subject to risk of disappearance, destruction or essential alteration of their values" throughout Spain. "It is not easy to enter this red list", clarifies Carlos Henrique Fernández Coto, president of the Association for the Defense of Galician Cultural Heritage (Apatrigal), which belongs to Hispania Nostra.
The president of Apatrigal points out that this inclusion is a "wake-up call" to the owner. And it is possible to leave the Red List and go to the Green List if the necessary actions are taken so that the property looks in good condition again: it has happened in the province with the Basilica of the Ascension, in Santa Mariña de Augas Santas (Allariz). Hispania Nostra justifies that this property was eliminated from the famous red list "when the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage commissioned the architect Manuel Seoane to develop a project to consolidate the monumental complex and adapt it to its surroundings".
In the case of Melón, the latest news is the 1.5 million that Fomento invests in the project to fix the north and south wing of the monastic compound. The municipal government declared last November the intention of trying to convert the monastery into an agricultural research and production center, thus taking advantage of the 33,000 square meters of this environment.
