An Eisenhower Green Ash tree was planted in the southeast section of the Heritage Park in Junction City, KS in memory of fallen US Air Force veteran, Joseph M. Schonberner. At the base of this Green Ash tree is a gray granite marker that is flat at ground level. The text on this dedication marker reads as follows:

"Eisenhower Green Ash
Joseph M. Schonberner
USAF (Purple Heart medallion) 27th Inf."

Unfortunately, no rank, dates or place was mentioned other than an airman was apparently attached to the 27th infantry at the time he was mortally wounded. The assumption is make he was awarded a Purple Heart medal since the medallion of a Purple Heart award is engraved in the marker.

The tree chosen is referred to as an Eisenhower Green Ash tree because this tree is a direct descendant of the Green Ash tree that is growing in the yard of Dwight David Eisenhower's birth home in Dennison, Texas. Seeds from this Green Ash have been propagated for use as veteran's memorials as dedicated trees, like this one is. The tree itself is a Green Ash tree (fraxinus pannsylvannica. But, because it was propigated from seeds gotten from the actual Green Ash tree growing in Dennison, TX at the birth home of General Eisenhower, for use as a veteran's memorial tree, it is called an Eisenhower Green Ash tree. Eisenhower was the 5-Star general who was named by Congress to be the Supreme Commander of Allied Expeditionary Forces and who is credited with winning the European war against Germany in WW2. Eisenhower went on to become the 34th President of the United States.
