FORMER
CHAIN HORSE HOUSE

Stables erected on this site reputedly housed a chain-horse
used to draw loads up the steep slope from late 18th Century
mills located in the sandstone gorge known as The Torrs.

High level bridges were later built across the rivers Sett and
Goyt. Those visible to the right are the 1867 and 1901 Midland
Railway viaducts (fore and background) and between them the 1882
New Mills-Hayfield turnpike road or Queens Bridge. To the left were
dwellings known locally as Bamford. Behind are former 19th Century
Weavers Cottages aside the cobbled roadway. Below, alongside
the River Sett, ran leats carrying water for industry.

The Torrs were re-opened to the public by New Mills Parish
Council in 1974, and links to the Sett Valley Trail, Mousley
Bottom and Goytside were added later. The area is now
designated as the 'Park underthe Town'.

Because of its dangerous state, the chain-horse house
was partially demolished and converted to
this viewing and seating area in 1980
by New Mill Town Council
