Fort Altena was built south of Sleeuwijk between 1847 and 1850. It lies along the old Route Impériale; the Napoleonic road from Paris to Amsterdam. Fort Altena served as a barrier to the access Breda-Gorinchem and the Uppelsche Dijk. Thirty years later, the fort was completely renovated and enlarged into an elongated fort. The old tower was extra protected on the south side with bomb-proof barracks on either side.

Fort Altena is part of the New Dutch Waterline (NHW). This defensive belt was built in the 19th century and has been nominated on the UNESCO World Heritage List. However, it never had to take action and now serves as a recreational nature gate.

The fort was used intensively during the First and Second World War. Sometimes as many as three hundred mobilized soldiers stayed there. After the Second World War, Fort Altena served for a few more years as an internment camp for collaborators.
