CaeLestInUs De Jong praesUL hUbertensIs Me ereXIt

"The Palais Abbatial is part of the abbey district of Saint-Hubert Abbey. After a tormented history of destruction, fires and looting, the abbey district was renovated in the classical style from 1729 to 1731, under the abbey of Célestin de Jong.  Renovation work completed in 2003 restored the palace to its original appearance. Since then, the monument has been classified as a Walloon Major Heritage site.

This French-style residence has three wings forming an inner courtyard. The front of the building is decorated with polychrome pediments. The entire building is made of painted brick, limestone, pierre de France and marble.

It is crowned by the main front building and stands out on the large slate frame with rumps, a wide winged gable and fire pots, openworked with 3 bays and supporting a curved pediment decorated with acanthus trees, a medallion and a phylactery with the inscription 'ARMORE NON TiMORE' and the year 1729. On the triangular tympanum of the eastern wing, similar decoration and inscription with chronogram:

CaeLestInUs De Jong praesUL hUbertensIs Me ereXIt

which gives the date 1729 (CLIVDIVLVIMXI).

At present the former abbey complex houses the State Archives Service and the Service for the Dissemination of Cultural Affairs of the Province."
