Dit grote kanon geeft de locatie aan waar het Arsenaal van Woudrichem gevestigd is en biedt een goede sfeerimpressie uit de tijd dat het gebouw nog als wapenopslag diende. De bijbehorende kazematten zijn ook een bezoekje waard.

Woudrichem (of Woerkum, zoals de vestingbewoners hun stad noemen) is een stoere vesting liggend aan de Merwede. Woudrichem maakte als vestingstad onderdeel uit van zowel de Oude als de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Samen met vesting Gorinchem zorgde ze voor de afsluiting van de rivier de Waal voor de vijand. Het geschut ondersteunde vesting Gorinchem, Slot Loevestein en Fort Vuren.

Uit die tijd (19e eeuw) is veel bewaard gebleven zoals bastions (7 stuks), ravelijnen (2) en beren (2). Verder zijn aanwezig: een bomvrij arsenaal (1851), een versterkte kazerne (1852) en meerdere buskruitmagazijnen (1867). Alle werken verkeren in goede staat.

Tegenwoordig is in het arsenaal een maritiem museum gevestigd. Het is tevens een feestlocatie voor bruiloften en partijen.

This large cannon indicates the location where the Arsenaal van Woudrichem is located and offers a good impression of the atmosphere from the time when the building was still used as a weapon storage. The accompanying casemates are also worth a visit.

Woudrichem (or Woerkum, as the fortress residents call their city) is a sturdy fortress lying on the Merwede. As a fortified city, Woudrichem was part of both the Old and the New Dutch Waterline. Together with the Gorinchem fortress, she ensured that the river Waal was closed off from the enemy. The guns supported Gorinchem Fortress, Loevestein Castle and Fort Vuren.

Much has been preserved from that time (19th century) such as bastions (7 pieces), ravelins (2) and bears (2). Also present are: a bombproof arsenal (1851), a fortified barracks (1852) and several gunpowder magazines (1867). All works are in good condition.

Today, the arsenal is home to a maritime museum. It is also a location for weddings and parties.
