Deze mooie Lourdesgrot vindt u achter de Rooms-katholieke H. Machutuskerk in het Zuid-Hollandse Monster. Reeds in 1877 liet pastoor Hermanus Bauer de grot bouwen door Th. Kuipers. De totale kosten zouden f 2.400,-- hebben bedragen.
De grot dient ter herinnering aan de verschijningen van Maria aan Bernadette in Lourdes in het jaar 1858. Het is voor die tijd op zich opmerkelijk dat nog geen twintig jaar later de pastoor van het kleine Monster het initiatief heeft genomen voor de bouw van een grot. Dit maakt het mogelijk de oudste Lourdesgrot van Nederland. Overigens gaat het verhaal dat persoonlijke omstandigheden hier een belangrijke rol speelden. Door zijn ouderdom, persoonlijke kwalen en de grote afstand was het voor pastoor Bauer niet mogelijk om naar Lourdes af te reizen. Het alternatief was snel gevonden: een kopie van de grot in Lourdes in de nabijheid van kerk en pastorie bouwen.

Beschrijving van de grot:
De grot is circa 4 meter hoog, 5 meter breed en 5 meter diep. Aan drie zijden (links, rechts en achter) ligt op circa 2 meter afstand een muur. Ongeveer 5 meter noordelijk van het front van de grot loopt de achtermuur van het mortuarium van de kerk, dat circa 1970 is gebouwd. Hoewel de grot niet meer vanaf de straat te zien is, is zij nog altijd vrij toegankelijk. De bezoeker volgt vanaf de Choorstraat het pad langs de westzijde van de kerk, naar het kerkhof. In plaats van rechtsaf te slaan naar het kerkhof moet hij het pad rechtdoor volgen. Na een tiental meters staat hij op een binnenplaats met de grot. Het bouwwerk is beschut door hoogopgaand struikgewas.
In de nagebouwde Lourdesgrot is een achterom uitgespaard, met een zeer oneffen bodem. De muur achter de grot bevat drie nissen, waarvan de twee buitenste elk bezet zijn door een aartsengel, de handen rustend op het gevest van hun zwaard.
Links voor de grot staat een knielbank. Hierop staat de tekst 'Va boire et te laver à cette fontaine' ('Ga drinken en je wassen bij die bron'). Gedoeld wordt op de bron die ontstond op de plek waar Maria aan Bernadette Soubirous verscheen. Tussen bank en grot staat een beeld van de knielende Bernadette (hoogte ongeveer 40 cm).
Rechtsboven op de rots, circa 2,5 meter vanaf de grond, staat het beeld van O.L. Vrouw van Lourdes (hoogte ongeveer 70 cm).
In de wand onder Maria is halverwege de grond een witmarmeren plaatje vastgemetseld, met daarop een stukje steen, afmetingen ongeveer 7 bij 15 centimeter, afkomstig uit de oorspronkelijke rots te Lourdes.

This beautiful Lourdes cave can be found behind the Roman Catholic St. Machutus Church in the South Holland Monster. As early as 1877, Father Hermanus Bauer had the cave built by Th. Kuipers. The total costs would have been NLG 2,400.
The cave commemorates the apparitions of Mary to Bernadette in Lourdes in 1858. It is remarkable for that time that less than twenty years later the priest of the little Monster took the initiative to build a cave. This makes it possibly the oldest Lourdes cave in the Netherlands. Incidentally, the story goes that personal circumstances played an important role here. Due to his old age, personal ailments and the great distance, it was not possible for Father Bauer to travel to Lourdes. The alternative was quickly found: build a copy of the grotto in Lourdes in the vicinity of the church and rectory.

Description of the cave:
The cave is approximately 4 meters high, 5 meters wide and 5 meters deep. On three sides (left, right and rear) there is a wall about 2 meters away. About 5 meters north of the cave front is the back wall of the church's mortuary, built circa 1970. Although the cave can no longer be seen from the street, it is still freely accessible. From the Choorstraat, the visitor follows the path along the west side of the church to the cemetery. Instead of turning right to the cemetery, he has to follow the path straight ahead. After about ten meters he is in a courtyard with the cave. The structure is sheltered by tall bushes.
In the recreated Lourdes cave, a back entrance has been left, with a very uneven bottom. The wall behind the cave contains three niches, the outer two of which are each occupied by an archangel, hands resting on the hilts of their swords.
To the left of the cave is a kneeling bench. It contains the text 'Va boire et te laver à cette fontaine' ('Go drink and wash at that well'). It refers to the source that arose where Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous. Between the bench and the cave is a statue of the kneeling Bernadette (height about 40 cm).
At the top right of the rock, about 2.5 meters from the ground, is the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes (height about 70 cm).
Halfway down the ground, a white marble slab has been attached to the wall under Mary, with a piece of stone, measuring approximately 7 by 15 centimeters, from the original rock at Lourdes.
