Over het gebouw 'Oude Raedthuys':
Het (oude) stadhuis van Woudrichem, ook wel Oude Raedthuys genoemd, is een voormalig gemeentehuis uit de 16e eeuw in de plaats Woudrichem.
Het is een onderkelderd gebouw met zadeldak tussen trapgevels, waarin natuurstenen banden en blokken en korfbogen boven de vensters. Aan de voorgevel bevindt zich een bordes met twee trappen en op de balustrade schildhoudende leeuwen. In de voorgevel een steen in de vorm van een cartouche met het jaartal 1592. Het gebouw is een rijksmonument.
Het stadhuis werd gerestaureerd in 1957.
Het huidige gemeentehuis is gelegen aan het Raadhuisplein.

Over de stad Woudrichem:
Woudrichem is een oude vestingstad aan de Merwede in de provincie Noord-Brabant in het Land van Heusden en Altena, in de gemeente Altena. Woudrichem telt ruim 4000 inwoners. Het was ook een voormalige gemeente, voordat deze opging in de gemeente Altena.
Woudrichem ligt in het noorden van het Land van Altena aan de monding van de Afgedamde Maas in de Waal. Die twee rivieren stromen daarna samen verder als de Boven-Merwede. Deze samenvloeiing is ook het ‘drieprovinciënpunt’ waar de grenzen tussen de provincies Zuid-Holland, Noord-Brabant en Gelderland bij elkaar komen.
De Afgedamde Maas ligt aan de oostkant van het stadje, met aan de overzijde het Slot Loevestein, in de buurgemeente Zaltbommel. De Boven-Merwede stroomt aan de noordkant langs Woudrichem. Aan de overkant ligt Gorinchem, de grootste stad in de omgeving.
Er zijn meerdere verklaringen voor de oorsprong van de plaatsnaam Woudrichem. De eerste en meest waarschijnlijke uitleg stelt dat de plaatsnaam afkomstig is van wald en heim, en duidt op een bosrijke omgeving. Een tweede uitleg is dat ene Heer Waldrik een huis oprichtte aan de oever van de Waal. Door de tijd heen werd Woudrichem verschillend uitgesproken en geschreven.
Woudrichem is ontstaan in de negende eeuw. Woudrichem lag strategisch aan de samenvloeiing van Maas en Waal in de invloedssfeer van zowel het Hertogdom Brabant, Gelre en het Graafschap Holland. In 1322 werd het Land van Altena bij het Graafschap Holland gevoegd om pas in 1815 bij de nieuw gevormde provincie Noord-Brabant te worden ingedeeld. In de veertiende eeuw was de stad zo uitgegroeid, dat de Heer van Altena, Willem VII van Horne, in 1356 stadsrechten verleende aan Woudrichem. In deze tijd werd ook de Martinuskerk gebouwd. In 1386 begon men met de bouw van de stadsmuur. Het was in dit jaar dat de Graaf van Holland het Land van Altena naar zich toetrok. Door de strategische ligging werd Woudrichem regelmatig belegerd. Zo werd de stad in 1405 door de Arkelsen overvallen en door de Geldersen in 1511. In 1572 koos Woudrichem de zijde van Willem van Oranje. In 1573 vonden de Geuzen dat de stad onverdedigbaar was en staken deze in brand. Tussen 1583 en 1588 werd een vestinggordel gebouwd rond de stad, die echter een kleiner oppervlak omsloot dan de voormalige stadsmuur. De vesting werd ontworpen door Adriaen Antonisz. van Alkmaar. Met hulp van omliggende steden vond wederopbouw van het stadje plaats. Niettemin bleef de economische situatie slecht en in 1700 kreeg Woudrichem daarom vrijstelling van belastingen.
In 1814 werd Woudrichem opgenomen in de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. In de omgeving van de stad mocht voortaan niet meer gebouwd worden en in 1815 werd in de dijk een sluis gebouwd waardoor het omliggende land zou kunnen worden geïnundeerd. Pas in 1926 werden de bepalingen versoepeld en eerst in 1955 werd de vesting opgeheven. Dit schiep de mogelijkheid om woonwijken buiten de vestingwallen aan te leggen. Vanaf 1971 is de historische stadskern gerestaureerd. Dit centrum is geklasseerd als beschermd stadsgezicht.
In 2006 vierde Woudrichem 650 jaar stadsrechten.

The (old) town hall of Woudrichem, also known as Oude Raedthuys, is a former town hall from the 16th century in the town of Woudrichem.
It is a basement building with a gable roof between stepped gables, in which natural stone bands and blocks and basket arches above the windows. On the front facade is a landing with two stairs and on the balustrade shield-holding lions. In the facade a stone in the form of a cartouche with the year 1592. The building is a national monument.
The town hall was restored in 1957.
The current town hall is located on the Raadhuisplein.

Woudrichem is an old fortified town on the Merwede in the province of Noord-Brabant in the Land of Heusden and Altena, in the municipality of Altena. Woudrichem has more than 4000 inhabitants. It was also a former municipality before it merged into the municipality of Altena.
Woudrichem is located in the north of the Land van Altena at the mouth of the Afgedamde Maas in the Waal. These two rivers then flow together as the Boven-Merwede. This confluence is also the "three provinces point" where the borders between the provinces of South Holland, North Brabant and Gelderland come together.
The Afgedamde Maas is located on the east side of the town, with Slot Loevestein on the other side, in the neighboring municipality of Zaltbommel. The Boven-Merwede flows on the north side along Woudrichem. On the other side is Gorinchem, the largest city in the area.
There are several explanations for the origin of the place name Woudrichem. The first and most likely explanation states that the place name comes from wald en heim, and indicates a wooded area. A second explanation is that one Heer Waldrik founded a house on the bank of the Waal. Over time, Woudrichem was pronounced and written differently.
Woudrichem originated in the ninth century. Woudrichem was strategically located at the confluence of Maas and Waal in the sphere of influence of the Duchy of Brabant, Gelre and the County of Holland. In 1322, the Land van Altena was added to the County of Holland, only to be classified in 1815 in the newly formed province of Noord-Brabant. In the fourteenth century the city had grown to such an extent that the Lord of Altena, Willem VII van Horne, granted city rights to Woudrichem in 1356. The Martinuskerk was also built during this time. Construction of the city wall began in 1386. It was in this year that the Count of Holland took over the Land of Altena. Due to its strategic location, Woudrichem was regularly besieged. For example, the city was raided by the Arkelsen in 1405 and by the Geldersen in 1511. In 1572, Woudrichem sided with William of Orange. In 1573, the Geuzen thought the city was indefensible and set it on fire. Between 1583 and 1588 a fortress belt was built around the city, which, however, enclosed a smaller area than the former city wall. The fortress was designed by Adriaen Antonisz. from Alkmaar. The town was rebuilt with the help of surrounding towns. Nevertheless, the economic situation remained bad and in 1700 Woudrichem was therefore exempt from taxes.

In 2006 Woudrichem celebrated 650 years of city rights.
