George Mendonsa was a U.S. Navy sailor on leave from the USS
The Sullivans; Greta Zimmer Friedman was a dental assistant wearing a nurses uniform. And chances are we would never have heard of either of them but as Times Square was packed with men and women celebrating the end of WWII on VJ Day, George swept Greta into a kiss and photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt just happened to be there and snapped four quick photos, one of which became the most iconic image of the end of the war. This colorful life-size statue duplicates that moment.
