De beelden van de drie damwachters staan symbool voor de grondleggers, die hier in vroeger eeuwen de ontwikkeling rond de Leytsche Dam op gang brachten. Het wachten en kijken is in deze beeldengroep een belangrijk beeldend en poëtisch aspect.
De staande man symboliseert Leidschendam. Hij wordt geflankeerd door twee gehurkte figuren die symbool staan voor noord en zuid (Leiden en Delft).
De staande man (het heden) rust op een grote hamer, symbool voor de arbeid, de opbouw en de strijd en heeft een hond op zijn schouder, symbool voor trouw en vergankelijkheid. De wijzende man (de toekomst) heeft een boot op de arm die de scheepvaart verbeeldt. De verstilde gehurkte figuur (het verleden) heeft een amorfe vorm op het hoofd die de eerste steen in de rivier, het begin van de dam symboliseert.
Naast de beeldengroep is in het straatwerk een tegel met uitleg aangebracht.

The statues of the three dam keepers symbolize the founders who initiated the development around the Leytsche Dam here in earlier centuries. Waiting and watching is an important visual and poetic aspect in this sculpture group.
The standing man symbolizes Leidschendam. He is flanked by two squatting figures that symbolize north and south (Leiden and Delft).
The standing man (the present) rests on a large hammer, a symbol of work, construction and struggle and has a dog on his shoulder, a symbol of loyalty and transience. The pointing man (the future) has a boat on his arm that represents shipping. The hushed squatting figure (the past) has an amorphous shape on the head that symbolizes the first stone in the river, the beginning of the dam.
In addition to the sculpture group, a tile with an explanation has been placed in the street work.
