'The Allentown Garden Club's most recent undertaking (begun in 1995) is the Wire Mill Meadow Arboretum in Fountain Park where one finds collections of conifer trees (a “pinetum”), native trees and plants as well as an oak grove.
The arboretum received its name from the factory that once stood on this site, the American Steel and Wire Company (itself an expansion of the former Iowa Barb Wire Company which arrived Allentown in 1886 and later bought by the U.S. Steel Corporation). Years after “the wire mill” closed, the site was designated for park purposes.
Today, beautiful Fountain Park and the Wire Mill Meadow Arboretum provide visitors welcome respite from the daily hustle and bustle. The Allentown Garden Club will holds annual Arbor Day tree planting ceremony at the Arboretum (Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Lehigh Street).
