Warmelo castle has several themed gardens surrounding it. One of them is the Well garden. It was constructed early 20-th century. The centre is formed by a draw well constructed of Bentheimer sandstone. The stone elements are held together with iron staples.
The well elements are from an earlier date, it seems that there is an inscription in it saying 1765.
In this area are more of this wells, the oldest constructed in the year 1755.
In other parts of the Netherlands you won't find these wells. The distance to the Bentheim quarries is to far. The parts had to be transported with horses and carriages.
In a wrought iron construction on top of the well hangs a pulley containing a chain with an iron bucket to bring the water up.
Nowadays the well still provides water.
A grid prevents for people fall into the well.
