Prime Meridian Marker - Wood Street, Walthamstow, UK - Greenwich Meridian Markers on Waymarking.com

The line of the Greenwich Meridian is marked by a pavement slab, laid here by the then Borough of Walthamstow in 1963. That old Borough now forms part of the London Borough of Waltham Forest. The slab has an oval marking, with a line through the centre at an angle to the pavement to indicate the line of the Meridian. Above the line, in raised metal lettering, is the word “GREENWICH”, following the oval marking, and below the line is “MERIDIAN”. The slab is, at the time of writing, 57 years old and starting to show its age.

The coordinates for this Waymark are for the pavement slab described above. Some twenty yards to the north on the same pavement is a second marker. This takes the form of a circular metal plate, looking for all the world like a drain cover. This has a capital ‘M’ at the centre, two concentric rings of smaller letter ‘M’s and the following wording around the edge of the plate “GREENWICH MERIDIAN LINE”.

A few similar plates have appeared, to replace the green and yellow thermoplastic Compass Rose markings that were placed in 2000 and have almost now disappeared from Waltham Forests streets - although it seems there was never one of those at this particular location.

Both of these markings purport to indicate the line of the Greenwich Meridian across Wood Street, although, by definition, they cannot both be completely accurate. They can be found on the east side of Wood Street, outside of Pure Muscules Gym.
