The Bowmanville Boys Training School opened in 1924, with the first few buildings on the site completed by then. By 1927, the site consisted of 6 buildings, all in the Prairie Style of architecture.
At its opening, it was considered the most progressive Boys Training School in the country.
The school was in use until 1941, when the property was appropriated for use as a POW Camp (Camp 30). It housed foreign prisoners until 1945, when the Boys School returned to the site.
The school remained in operation until 1979. Since then it served as school for overseas Malaysian students, St. Stephen's Catholic Secondary School and finally a private Islamic university.
The site has been abandoned since 2008. In 2013, the site received recognition as a Canadian National Historic Site for its role as a POW Camp, and for its unique Prairie Style architecture.
