The 605m wrought iron half-through warren truss bridge was built between 1873-1879 It was used by trains until 1925 and during that time toll gates were installed to control other traffic crossing the bridge. There are five river spans of 35.9m to 38.9m and twenty three approach spans of 18.3m each on the eastern side, overhead latticed cross-bracing exist only on the river spans
