Robert Goddard is today acknowledged as one of the founders of modern rocketry. However, his work was largely ignored and even ridiculed at the time. This waymark is a replica of his 1926 liquid-fueled rocket. Powered by gasoline and liquid oxygen, the first fight lasted just 2.5 seconds, but paved the way for larger and more practical rockets. Goddard soon abandoned this design (with the exhaust nozzle at the top) and moved to rockets with the combustion chamber and nozzle at the bottom. This exact replica of this first rocket is on the second floor of
Science Museum Oklahoma. See the link for hours and cost of admission.
