As well as detailed information about some of the wildlife that can be seen along the canal there is the following general information.
THE AIRE AND CALDER NAVIGATION
WILDLIFE ALONG THE NAVIGATION  THE VALUE OF CANALS FOR WILDLIFE

The Aire and Calder Navigation stretches from the centre of Leeds to Goole Docks on the River Ouse. This canal is one of the oldest waterways in England and is today a refuge for wildlife, and a green corridor through some of the area's most industrialised landscapes.
Wetland and waterway habitats in Britain and Europe are disappearing at an ever increasing rate. This makes those remaining wetland habitats, like Britain's canal network increasingly important.

The canal and surrounding woods, fields and marshes is home to a rich variety of wildlife, and it is possible for casual walkers and boaters to see much of interest.
