This large substation is one of many in Chicago attributed to prairie school architect Hermann von Holst. A few tile details are visible at the top of the building. I am uncertain of the year of creation. The presence of modern equipment behind the historic building leads me to believe that it is still in use.

A contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright, von Holst grew up in Chicago after moving here with his family from Germany. He agreed to oversee Frank Lloyd Wright's practice after Wright abruptly moved to Europe with a married client. A biography of von Holst is here: (visit link)
