Clapham Common was acquired as a recreation ground by the Metropolitan Board of Works in 1877 from the Lords of the Manors of Clapham and Battersea. Seventy acres were drained and formal recreation grounds laid out. Ownership of the land was transferred subsequently to London County Council on its formation in 1889. Several London County Council markers were placed along Nightingale Lane, which followed the parish boundary, and elsewhere along the west and south sides of their land ownership against existing properties, although many of these these followed no pre-existing political or church boundary.

This surviving boundary marker, like others close by, is made of cast iron and is semicircular in profile with a rounded top. Raised lettering on the front indicates 'London County Council Boundary'. Unusually in this example the base of the post can be seen; more usually this is buried.
Type of survey mark: Cast iron post.
